Preparing for our final exam

I've posted the questions for the final exam (the handout from class) on our Angel site, in case anyone needs it. I've also included the list of people who said they may want to get a study group together. If anyone wants to add themselves to the list, I'll set it up so that you can.

Remember to bring your list of blog posts/comments to the final exam session if you didn't hand it in yesterday!

The invention Of Hugo Cabret

This book was very interesting, I loved how the images in this book brought the book to life. I have never read a book that was half novel and half picture book. This book had great story to it. The book was about a boy named Hugo who lived inside of the train station. He lived alone after being left twice by two different men. Both of the men were taken away in death his father, and his uncle. This book tells the story of a boy who was lost in the world. And only had his notebook and his automan machine to keep him company. But by him unlocking this secret he is rewarded in the end. He receives a family who loves and cares for him, and he is able to live his dream as a magician, with the help of George Melies.

I really enjoyed this book too! I found it even more interesting that much of the book is based on actual people and events. There is a lot of information about automata on the website for the Franklin Institute and a video displaying the automaton that is very similar to the automaton that Selznick wrote about. This book left me wanting to see the automaton in action, so if you want to as well, visit this link:

There is also a part specifically for teachers who want to use this book and similar topics in their curriculum. Here is the link for that:

I would have to agree. The book was made more enjoyable basically because there was pictures to help explain the story. If there was not pictures to go along with the book i believe it would be very hard to follow along. I would recommend this book to everyone based off of the artwork that is associated with story.

I agree with both comments. The pictures really added a sense of originality to the piece. Even though we were unaware of the significance of the illustrations at the beginning of the piece, i felt that it brought all the pieces together at the end. I really enjoyed the drawings and it helped me feel as if I was more apart of the story than I already was. This book was very entertaining and I would recommend it any teacher or student.

I also found this interview with the author that I found interesting...

This book was the first time I had read a novel where the pictures told as much about the story as the words did. It reminded me of the books I used to read when I was a child. The pictures give faces to the names and visuals of what their surroundings looked like. I agree with the other posts in saying that if the pictures were not there then the story would not have come to live as well as it did.

When I looked up this novel online, I was surprised to see all of the information, websights, and even news about the upcoming movie based on this book. This to me showed this book was something special if it was this easy to find a lot of information about it. I think that this type of book is becoming more popular because to me it was like reading a silent movie.

I was just curious, does anyone else know of any other books that are setup in the same way as Hugo? Im not a big reader, but I really did enjoy this book, and Wouldn't mind reading something that was setup in the same vain as hugo, the fact that it reminded me of the silent films that I love so much as a teen also makes me want to find other books like this one. I wonder if there could be a possible sequel to this one? Maybe a prequel or something about the father and uncle, that could be interesting, I'll be keeping a look out for other books like this one, thats for sure
