Preparing for our final exam

I've posted the questions for the final exam (the handout from class) on our Angel site, in case anyone needs it. I've also included the list of people who said they may want to get a study group together. If anyone wants to add themselves to the list, I'll set it up so that you can.

Remember to bring your list of blog posts/comments to the final exam session if you didn't hand it in yesterday!

The Little House

Burton, Lee Virginia. The Little House. Boston, NY. Houghton Mifflin Company, 1942.

The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton is a realistic fiction, children’s story about a Little House that is built in the countryside. The house has lifelike qualities and loves being in the country, she watches as the seasons change, and years go by. Suddenly the city life seems to become closer and closer to the Little House, and soon she is surrounded by apartment buildings, subways, and a fast past life. The Little House starts to get past by as if it isn’t even there at all. Soon the Little House grows very sad and lonely, until one day when a woman notices the little house. The woman says, “That Little House looks just like the Little House my grandmother lived in when she was a little girl”. Finally the little house is remembered and brought back to the countryside where it is taken care of, and soon becomes a very happy Little House.

Burton, does a wonderful job of showing the happiness and warmth that is related to the countryside while comparing it to the dark, busy, and sometimes scary city life by using simple yet colorful illustrations. Burton’s illustrations also make it easy to see when the Little house is happy and peaceful in the countryside and then scared and lonely in the city. This touching story shows the peaceful, richness of the countryside in comparison to the scary fast past city life that many of us live in today.
