Preparing for our final exam

I've posted the questions for the final exam (the handout from class) on our Angel site, in case anyone needs it. I've also included the list of people who said they may want to get a study group together. If anyone wants to add themselves to the list, I'll set it up so that you can.

Remember to bring your list of blog posts/comments to the final exam session if you didn't hand it in yesterday!

Kids' books become ideological battleground in Sweden

A friend of mine who is a local librarian just sent me a link to a short news article that I thought some of you might find interesting. The focus is on two Swedish publishing houses that are deliberately adding nontraditional gender images in their stories.

What do people think?

I personally do not find anything wrong with publishing books like this because I believe that literature is an art that should not have boundaries. But, I think that the distribution of books such as these, especially since they are children's books, need to be handled carefully. If a parent wants their child exposed to the topics portrayed in controversial books it is their personal choice and they should be the ones to present these ideas to their child--not the schools or other forms of public. I think it is in the school systems best interest to stick to traditional literature in order to avoid further conflict with parents. Overall, I think that it is good to have books like this available for children so they can understand the reality of the world today. Books are a huge part of a child's life and it is good for children of all backgrounds and family lifestyles can have literature they can relate to. Once again, it should be the parent's decision as to what books their child is exposed to

After reading this article I thought it was great news to hear that they were publishing Children's books portraying gay families as normal to other types of families. I also thought the idea of having children's books not be gender specific was a good change. In the article the publishers also say that they have had an overwhelming positive response so far from parents, which is great to hear. I think it is important for children to be aware of these topics and books are definitely a great way to help them. I also believe that it also needs to be the parents discretion when to introduce topics to their kids.
